Background[edit | edit source]
What is the FIRST Battle Royale/Hunger Games video game? The first Battle Royale wasn't actually a game, it was a mod in DayZ (mod) in Arma 2 called Survivor GameZ. Everyone spawns in an area making a circle and in the middle of the circle there were optional backpacks you can take with random loot inside (The Hunger Games movie/books). This mod was accessible for the public, but only during qualifiers where the public can win matches to then compete in the finals with YouTubers/Streamers.
Brendan Greene (PLAYERUNKNOWN) saw this mod (Survivor GameZ) take off, he loved the idea around it. So he got into modding and created a mod, thanks to DayZ mod on Arma 2, his mod was called DayZCherno+. After DayZ Battle Royale was finished, then came Arma 3.
PLAYERUNKNOWN moved onto bringing the mod into Arma 3 where 'PLAYERUNKNOWN’S Battle Royale' was born. Unlike most Battle Royale games now which stick to the core concept of Battle Royale only, the Arma 3 BR Mod has different game modes ranging from Battle Royale: WAR, Street Fight and Battle Royale: Ghost Hotel. It was PLAYERUNKNOWN'S unique taste on the Battle Royale game mode. Later, in partnership with the Iron Front mod team, he also created a Battle Royale WW2 version called Iron Front: Battle Royale .
This is when the Battle Royale genre within video games started.
After the Arma 3 BR Mod, the games success with being on top of Twitch's Top Games being streamed it caught attention by a studio, Daybreak came to PLAYERUNKNOWN. Daybreak licensed 'PLAYERUNKNOWN'S Battle Royale (the game mode)' from PLAYERUNKNOWN which then created H1Z1: King of the Kill. With the success and popularity of King of the Kill, spin-off Battle Royale titles came about like 'The Culling.' Years later, in 2016 PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS went into development to make the TRUE Battle Royale experience. Then with the success and popularity of PUBG selling 20 million copies in 6 -7 months for an Early Access title, a lot more spin-off Battle Royale titles (even games with Battle Royale servers or in DLC) came about.
How do the 'PLAYERUNKNOWN’S Battle Royale' games rank?
- Arma 3 BR: Realistic, slow pace.
- H1Z1: Arcadey, fast pace.
- PUBG: Mix between both of Arma 3 BR and H1Z1.
Each Battle Royale game has its own spin-off style/taste to the genre.
